Situated again in a quirky southern California, Author Blaylock spins an
engrossing, ghostly yarn about sibling relationships and obsession. Here
though, his hallmark of playful lunacy, is replaced by menacing dementia and
the overall feel of the story is far more serious than I am used to from
him.
Dave Quinn has been a spectator in his own life. Since he failed to save a
young, drowning girl 15 years ago (though he did save her sister), he has
been aimless, not so much lost in self pity but more in "what ifs". Now he
has found a home, of sorts, working as a set builder for the Earl of
Gloucester, a theatre prop and sets company. But his life is about to do a
somersault when his deranged boss falls for the now grown, girl he saved
from long ago. Factor in that Elinor, the long dead sibling, has tagged
along with her sister and they are all in for misery.
Just a dynamite, character driven, atmospheric story. I am unconvinced by
the ending, as nothing really seems resolved, but that does not detract from
what seems to be the maturing of James Blaylock as an author.
