Tesseracts Nine, continues the great Canadian speculative fiction anthology series, with a wonderful mix of stories highlighted by:
Mom and Mother Teresa by Candas Jane Dorsey - a fun look at life purpose and company who take over.
Lemmings in the Third Year by Jerome Stueart - in which intelligent lemmings are recruited to help in scientific research, into the feeding habits of owls, feeding on lemmings. A tongue-in-cheek story with the immortal line in response to a lemming gleefully postulating the exhilaration of being scooped into an owl's talons: "I underestimate their death wish."
Principles of Animal Eugenetics by Yves Meynard - a wonderful atmospheric/moody piece of small town quiet resisting government interference.
The Writing on the Wall by Steve Stanton - an interesting take on time travel and useful information one might leave for oneself, if visiting from the future.
Mirrors by Rene Beaulieu - a touching story of advance colonization gone bad, and what the survivors will do to ensure a presence for the next ship. Great story!!!
Anyway, just a brief description of a few highlights. Kudos to both Hopkinson and Ryman, for piecing together a stem-to-stern, satisfying read.
