Canadian Authors
This page is dedicated to those authors with a Canadian connection who have had at least one book reviewed herein.    Sometimes these connections are tenuous, but none the less, Canada has been a factor in these talent individual's lives.

Baker, Nancy has been dubbed, "the dark star of Canadian vampire writers".  Although not prolific, her output is none-the-less literal and exceptional.

Chafe, Paul writes SF when not studying computer engineering at Dalhousie University.  He lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Coney, Michael G., was reared in the U.K. and formally trained as a chartered accountant.  He has managed both an English tavern and a West Indies hotel, in his wide ranging career choices.  Though most of his stories have been published since he came to Canada in 1972, he is generally thought of as being an British author.   He passed away Nov 5/05.

Czerneda, Julie E., a biologist by training, published her first SF novel in 1997.  She is an advocate of using SF as a teaching tool to stretch the imagination and creativity of readers.  She resides in Ontario and her web page is here.

de Lint, Charles was born in the Netherlands but has made the Ottawa area his home for many years.  He is perhaps most famous for pioneering the "urban" fantasy field, though he has written in other genres and has also dabbled in criticism and publishing.  His home page can be found by clicking here.

Dickson, Gordon R. was born in Canada and lived here until his early teens.  Although mainly a SF author, his Dragon series is a great light-weight fantasy series.  Here, is a page dedicated to the Dragon books.

Dorsey, Candas Jane though not prolific, has still left her mark on the Canadian speculative scene with her literary stories, her editing and contributions as a publisher.  She is from Edmonton.

Duncan, David is primarily a fantasy author and a favourite of mine for his storytelling ability.  He grew up in Scotland, though has lived in the Canadian west for many years.  His web page is here.

Gardner, James Alan, a southern Ontario native, has written four SF novels set in a shared universe, only one of which I have had the pleasure of reading.  If the latter three are as entertaining as the first, then I am in for a treat.  His web page is somewhat spartan, but informative.

Green, Terence M., is a Toronto native and former high school English Teacher.  He has been publishing short and long fiction since the late 70's, though he now seems to be concentrating on novels.  His web page is found here.

Hopkinson, Nalo was born in Jamaica, has lived in Guyana and Trinidad but has resided in Canada since the age of 16.  Her father was a poet and playwright.

Jackson, Phillip Ellis has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago.  His Canadian connection is tenuous, as his mother and her family hail from here.

Jakober, Marie grew up in northern Alberta and writes both historical and speculative fiction.  A Carlton grad, she professes a fascination with power.

Jones, Dennis is a native Ontarian, writing full-time since 1988.  He has studied at both Queens and York Universities and currently is finishing work on his first fantasy trilogy.

Kay, Guy Gavriel writes sweeping, emotionally charged fantasy.  Usually based on some historical thread, he sets the bar for other's of this style to try and reach.  Here, is a comprehensive page dedicated to his works.

Kernaghan, Eileen has won two Aurora awards.  She lives in Burnaby, BC and writes adult and YA fantasy.

Kilian, Crawford lives in Vancouver, B.C., where he writes and teaches at Capilano College.  An American by birth, he came to Canada in 1967.   He has an informative web page here.

Kinsella, W.P. writes imaginative stories in which baseball usually (to my knowledge) plays a role.  The native Albertan's work is accepted outside of the fantasy field and he has been filmed on at least two occasions.

Mackay, Scott lives in Toronto and has published both in the SF and mystery genres.

Russell, Sean a native of Pickering Beach, ON.,  writes period fantasy in epic length, yet fortunately eschewing never ending scenery descriptions in favour of great characterizations and entertaining plots.  He currently resides on Vancouver Island. His web page is here.

Saari, Teresa enjoys writing primarily for children, but is thrilled that her stories appeal to adults as well. She spends her free time visiting children in schools and libraries, where she reads excerpts from her books and shares the ups, downs, and inbetweens of her writing experiences.  Her web page is found here.

Sawyer, Robert J. is not just an award winning author, but, perhaps, Canada's greatest advocate of SF.

Sinclair, Alison was born in the U.K. but now resides in the Canadian west.  She has three other SF novels published and has degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Medicine.  Her web page is here.

Stewart, Sean is a personal favourite for his literary style and humanistic approach.  He was born in the Texas, though relocated to Edmonton, shortly thereafter.  He has recently moved back to the USA.  A web page dedicated to his works can be found here.

van Belkom, Edo moved from journalism to creative writing and has carved a niche in the horror genre.  Yet his here reviewed, Northern Dreamers, is interviewing/journalism at it's best and a driving force in my motivations for the creation of this site.  His web page is found here.

Vonarburg, Elisabeth is a resident of Chicoutimi, Quebec who writes primarily in French - though fortunately for us mono-lingual types, is getting greater English exposure with translations.  Here web page can be found here.

Weiner, Andrew is primarily a short story writer whose works have appeared in many of the leading genre magazines.  He has a degree in social Psychology and moved to Canada in the 70's from his native England.  He now resides in the Toronto area

Willett, Edward was born in Texas, though moved to Saskatchewan at an early age.  He has studied journalism, though he works the gamut of fiction, nonfiction and technical writings.  His web page is found here.

Williams, Lynda is a B.C. native with Chemistry, computing and Creative Writing credentials to her credit.  Her web site is here.

Wilson, Robert Charles moved to Canada at age 9 from California.  He is largely unsung considering his body of consistently well received works.  A fan page, can be found here.

Whyte, Jack has written a hugely popular Arthurian series, looking at the historical possibilities instead of playing on the fantastic elements.  Whether this removes the books from the traditional Arthurian grounds of fantasy, and places it as more mainstream, I guess is debatable.  Any which way though, the series is excellent.
